Shoppers bewildered by nutrition ratings.(MERCHANDISING)(Brief article)

WASHINGTON -- Nutrition rating systems and symbols on food packages "often lead to confusion in the grocery aisle," says a new report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

Consumers may be befuddled, especially when they are pressed for time, adds the report from the institute, the health arm of the National Academy of Science.

Federal regulators should develop a new system with symbols that graphically convey calorie counts by serving size and a "point" value showing whether the saturated and trans fats, sodium and added sugars in the products are below threshold levels, according to the report.
