QLD:Brisbane airport doesn't expect delays
By Darren Cartwright
BRISBANE, Aug 19 AAP - Strike action by quarantine staff at Brisbane International
Airport has caused minimal disruption to passengers, says an airport spokeswoman.
Quarantine staff walked off the job for four hours from 6am (AEST) on Friday over a pay dispute.
The action had been flagged for a week with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry
and Fisheries, according to Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) spokeswoman Nadine
Flood.
Brisbane Airport Corporation spokeswoman Rebecca Masci said everything went "smoothly"
during the morning peak hour.
"Everything is running normally," Ms Masci said.
"The Australian Quarantine Inspection Service has put on additional staff to make sure
that passengers are all processed and facilitated as normal.
"We are through peak hour, so we don't expect any delays from here."
But Ms Flood warned anyone heading to Brisbane international airport should be patient
if they are picking up a passenger or if they are departing.
"There will be some significant effects but the extent of that depends on what contingency
plans the government has in place," Ms Flood told AAP.
"Quarantine is the slowest part for incoming passengers."
Ms Flood said the federal government's three per cent pay cap on public sector agreements
prevented departments from entering "genuine" negotiations with staff.
She said the strike would impact on cargo inspections, the release of imported goods
and X-ray screening of international mail.
There are 158 quarantine staff at Brisbane Airport.
"We are expecting a series of industrial actions unless we see negotiations recommence,"
Ms Flood said.

NSW:Easter revellers warned on drink spiking
By Lauren Farrow
SYDNEY, April 21 AAP - Easter revellers in NSW have been warned to watch their drinks
this long weekend, following several recent reports of drink spiking in Sydney.
"Our staff have been notified by a venue in Oxford Street area of a drink spiking incident
and by a venue goer in the CBD area," City of Sydney manager of late night economy Suzie
Matthews told AAP on Thursday.
Ms Matthews said there had been several drink spiking incidents reported in the past
month, which had raised concerns about partygoers' safety.
"It's just a timely warning to people who do go out over the Easter and Anzac long
weekend, to just be mindful and watch their drinks," she said.
Following the recent reports, the City of Sydney has reissued drink coasters to local
pubs and clubs that were launched in a drink spiking campaign in 2006.
The coasters feature optical illusions designed to highlight the effects of intoxication,
and pose the question,"Feel more drunk than you should?"
Ms Matthews said the recent reports in Sydney highlighted the importance of being vigilant.
"We haven't done anything (on drink spiking) in the past several years as it had fallen
off the radar ... but it's back on the radar again," she said.
The penalties for drink spiking can include a hefty fine and up to 25 years' imprisonment.
People can protect themselves by buying their own drinks and never leaving them unattended.
People should also report suspicious behaviour and tell people where they are going
and with whom.

NSW:Nurses offered 9.7% pay rise, more staff
SYDNEY, Feb 1 AAP - NSW nurses have been offered a 9.7 per cent pay rise over two years
and improved staffing levels after industrial action that saw hundreds of beds closed
in public hospitals across the state.
The NSW Nurses' Association (NSWNA) launched the action in early January, demanding
a ratio of one nurse to every four patients to improve standards of care.
The union said it had received an offer from the state government that amounted to
the equivalent of a 1:4 staffing ratio in most major to medium-sized hospitals across
the state.
The staffing ratios would vary depending on the time of day, NSWNA assistant secretary
Judith Kiejda told AAP on Tuesday.
The government offered a 9.7 per cent pay rise up to 2012, partly backdated to July 2010.
"It (the offer) provides the building blocks for what we are after," Ms Kiejda said.
"It will take more years of negotiating before we are ultimately where we want to be.
"But it's certainly a very good cornerstone."
The pay increase will take the basic weekly salary of a first-year registered nurse/midwife
from $984.50 in July 2010 to $1039.40 in July 2012, draft documents published by the nurses'
association showed.
Senior nurse/midwife managers' weekly pay would rise to $2049.60 under the same proposals.
The state government offer will be considered by the NSWNA council on Tuesday afternoon.
If it recommends the offer, it will be put to a member vote and a final decision will
probably be announced in mid-February, Ms Kiejda said.
Union members began closing hospital beds on January 4.
At the height of the industrial action almost 600 beds were shut.

TAS:Labor struggling in Denison
By Patrick Caruana
HOBART, Aug 24 AAP - Labor slipped behind independent Andrew Wilkie in the race for
Denison on Tuesday and now faces an uphill battle to retain the seat.
Labor's Jonathan Jackson is 1375 behind Mr Wilkie in the two-party preferred count
for the Hobart-based seat, with almost all of the ordinary votes counted.
Mr Jackson said he was not yet ready to concede defeat.
"It's gone up and down, and now it's just waiting for tomorrow," he told AAP on Tuesday.
"My understanding is that most of the postal votes will be done by tomorrow and we'll
have a clearer indication then."
The final result of the seat may not be known for another 11 days, as the deadline
for all postal votes is next Friday.
The Australian Electoral Commission will begin counting around 8100 of the 10,508 pre-poll,
postal, absent and provisional votes already received.
Mr Wilkie's wife (and spokeswoman) Kate Burton said he was not across the line yet.
"We're happy with where we are at, but we're not prepared to call it at this stage,"
Ms Burton told AAP.
"We're still regarding it as 50-50, so we'll know where we stand next week."
Greens candidate Geoff Couser said he still considered himself an outside chance to win the seat.
"It's really unlikely, it's a big mountain to climb," he said.
"But there are still 13,000 postal votes to be counted. I'd just like to make the point
that it's by no means definite.
"I'm a fair distance behind, but if I do get past Andrew Wilkie, then I'll get preferences,
and anything can happen."
Labor had held the seat by a comfortable 15 per cent margin before August 21, and received
a substantial swing towards them in the other four Tasmanian seats, as well as in the
Senate race.

He says the situation became so dire that firefighters were forced to manually remove
a steel fence and lift the grate enough to allow one member to climb into the flood waters.
Mr WALKLEY says had just another few minutes passed they would have been swept away.

FED: Elie serious but stable after sea rescue
MELBOURNE, Dec 21 AAP - Injured round-the-world yachtsman Yann Elies is in a serious
but stable condition aboard Australian frigate HMAS Arunta after being rescued in the
Indian Ocean on Saturday night.
The French solo yachtsman was taken off his 18 metre yacht Generali by crew members
of the Arunta who had boarded by using an inflatable boat while the ship remained 200
metres clear of the yacht.
A Defence Department spokesman said Elies had a broken left femur and was in a serious
but stable condition.
The Arunta's captain, Commander Stephen Bowater, said his crew had displayed exceptional
professionalism during the two days to reach the French sailor who was competing in the
Vendee Globe round-the-world race.
Elies was badly injured when he fell to the deck while changing sails in in heavy seas
1,200km south-west of Perth on Thursday.
Cmdr Bowater told the Vendee Globe website that his crew only had a few hours warning
to get the ship operational before it left Fremantle on Friday morning on its rescue voyage.
"We have proven again that the Navy constantly maintains the ability to respond at
short notice to emergency situations," Cmdr Bowater said.
He said Elies is receiving excellent medical care from the Royal Flying Doctor Service
(RFDS) doctor on board and is resting comfortably.
Fellow Vendee Globe yachtsman Marc Guillemot, who had left the race to give morale
support to Elies and witnessed the rescue, described the Arunta's crew as "highly professional".
"They prepared Yann for the transfer - still heavy swell but they carried out the manoeuvre
perfectly," Guillemot said.
"It was like a dream - it didn't seem real. They took care of that magnificently."
Guillemot, who suffered two broken legs at sea in 1985 when his catamaran capsized,
said he told Elies during his ordeal to remain patient "and not behave like I did".
Guillemot now intends to rejoin the race.
Elies' boat was left sailing slowly northwards under minimal sail and away from the
track of the worst of the low pressure systems.
A crew from Team Generali have left for Australia to go aboard a motor launch which
will take them out to the area, and they will sail her back to shore.

AFL: Blues happy with Kreuzer debut despite losing streak
By Adam Cooper
GEELONG, Vic, April 6 AAP - Young ruckman Matthew Kreuzer provided Carlton with a beacon
of hope amid their greatest losing streak in the AFL, following last night's defeat to
Essendon at the MCG.
Kreuzer underlined why the Blues took him with their No.1 pick in last year's national
draft with an eye-catching debut comprising 16 disposals, two goals and 12 hit-outs.
His game, and even eight goals to Brendan Fevola and 32 disposals to Chris Judd and
26 to Nick Stevens, was still not sufficient to get Carlton a win, as Essendon won 23.12
(150) to 21.8 (134).
The Blues have now lost their past 14 games, a streak equal to that of the one spanning
the 1901-02 seasons, and will become the club's worst if they lose to arch-rival Collingwood
on Sunday.
Carlton coach Brett Ratten was disappointed with another defeat, but could not have
asked any more from the club's next star, who defied expectation and stronger bodies to
impress.
"He was outstanding, Matthew Kreuzer," Ratten said.
"In his first game he showed the footy world it's not just his tap work, he follows
up and is beating the little blokes to get to the fall of the ball when he hits it or
even when his opposition ruckman hits it.
"That was an amazing display for a young man.
"With midfielders you can run around and get a bit more freedom, but when you're a
ruckman you've got to play one-on-one footy.
"You can't hide and shy from the fact you've got to jump in at centre bounces, with
blokes (trying to) smash you, and fly for contested marks (with) blokes hitting and kneeing
you.
"He's a young man who's done an outstanding job first game and it was probably one
of the best first-up games I've seen."
Carlton's latest defeat left Ratten with a "bitter pill to swallow" given so much went
right, yet still his side could not crack a win.
He tried to play down the significance of the losing record, by declaring it irrelevant
given many of the players involved in 2007 losses were no longer at the club.
"This is not about right now, it's about the future and how quickly we can get Carlton
Football Club into the finals," he said.

Vic: Defence requests delay in terror trial
MELBOURNE, April 20 AAP - A judge has criticised lawyers for a Melbourne man facing
terrorism-related charges after they asked for the trial to be delayed for a month.
Joseph Terrence Thomas was due to stand trial in the Victorian Supreme Court this month.
The 33-year-old has pleaded not guilty to intentionally receiving funds from a terrorist
organisation and possessing a falsified Australian passport.
Thomas had to find a new legal team after his solicitor Rob Stary last week withdrew
from the case because he may be called as a witness in the trial.
Thomas' barrister Kristine Hanscombe SC today applied for a four-week adjournment to
give Thomas' newly-appointed solicitor time to prepare for the trial.
Justice Bill Gillard said it was in the interest of Thomas and the administration of
justice for the trial to proceed as soon as possible.
"I have been in the law for well over 40 years," he said.
"I cannot believe what's happening in this case."
He said the defence team should have better foreseen the latest events.
"The trial is ready to proceed and these lawyers are running around in circles," he said.
Justice Gillard adjourned the matter until next Friday.

Solo effort by eBay in China is going ...
International Herald Tribune
12-20-2006
Keith Bradsher and Howard French contributed reporting.* Acknowledging that the online auction market in China is enticingly fast-growing but difficult to crack, eBay will shut its main Web site in China and enter into a joint venture with a Chinese company instead, according to a person briefed on the companies' plans.EBay will take a 49 percent stake in the venture, he said late Monday, and Tom Online, a Beijing-based Internet company that is controlled by the Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing, will take the majority share. Tom Online also will administer the venture, which has yet to be named. The plans call for eBay to put $40 million into the venture and Tom Online to contribute $20 million. Meg Whitman, the eBay chief executive, is to make the announcement Wednesday at eBay's office in Shanghai.EBay, which has already spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to establish its presence in China, declined to comment.Analysts said the move would not surprise them. ''It's an admission that they failed in China, on their own at least,'' said Tim Boyd, an analyst with Caris & Co., who has a ''buy'' rating on eBay shares, ''but I think that's something the market already knew.''Ina Steiner, editor of AuctionBytes.com, an online newsletter, said that ''a bailout in China would be a huge concession by eBay.'' She noted that last year, Whitman said China was eBay's biggest long-term opportunity in local markets. ''The company sold analysts on China as a way to counter slowing growth rates in its more mature markets like the U.S. and Germany,'' Steiner said. But China has not been easy territory for eBay. The company established itself there as early as 2002, when it pulled out of Japan in a concession to Yahoo's sizable lead there and bought a one-third stake in Eachnet.com, China's principal online auction site. The next year, eBay acquired the rest of Eachnet, bringing the total price to $180 million. In 2005, eBay spent an additional $100 million on marketing in China.Whitman predicted in 2002 that within four years, e-commerce revenue from all sources in China would grow nearly twelvefold to more than $16 billion.Whitman's projections were on the mark, Boyd said, ''but the problem has not been the growth in e-commerce in China. The problem has been that eBay is losing market share.''EBay has been trailing Taobao, the consumer auction arm of Alibaba.com, China's largest e-commerce company. The research firm Analysis International said that in 2005, Taobao's share of the Chinese online auction market was 57.7 percent, compared with 31.5 percent for eBay Eachnet.EBay's move is similar to a partnership Yahoo struck last year with Alibaba. With its own Chinese operations failing to gain traction, Yahoo paid $1 billion to hand over operations to Alibaba in exchange for a 40 percent stake in the company. Both deals represent new thinking among Internet companies, that what works in other countries does not necessarily work in China, where strong local managers are needed. In September, Martin Wu, the chief executive of eBay Eachnet, resigned after just a year in the position, and since then rumors have swirled that the company would leave the market entirely.Steiner said eBay had failed to understand the Chinese marketplace and culture. For example, she said, in contrast to Taobao, eBay Eachnet provided no phone support and discouraged buyer-seller contact that could lead to haggling. Also, she said, eBay failed to react quickly enough when Taobao entered the market with no user fees. In January, eBay Eachnet stopped charging transaction fees.Besides its loss of market share, she said, eBay in China ''continues to face regulatory and other challenges.'' She said a partnership with Tom Online would be ''an effort to salvage its Chinese investment.''EBay has played down its troubles in China. As recently as October, in a conference call with analysts and the media, Whitman sought to dispel speculation that the company might reverse course in the country.''We believe we are actually maintaining share in what is becoming an increasingly competitive market,'' she said then. ''We are committed to China for the long term.''But in recent days, Chinese bloggers and news sites have published an e-mail message from someone describing himself as a disgruntled Eachnet employee. ''I have suffered through the incompetence of eBay leaders for many years,'' he wrote. ''EBay has screwed up our company and in China.''The message continued, ''EBay failed in China because it relies on one leader who did not understand the market at all: Meg Whitman. Meg Whitman is eBay Mao Zedong.''EBay's stock has been climbing back after hitting a 52-week low of $22.83 in August. The shares closed Monday at $32.42, down 1.5 percent.Tom Online, with 75 million subscribers, allows users access to television, music stations and online stores through its popular Web portal and over wireless networks. In September 2005, it formed a joint venture with eBay in China to distribute the popular Internet telephone service Skype, which eBay owns.Overall, Boyd said he was encouraged by the news of eBay's new alliance. ''Now they're partnering with a strong Chinese presence on the Internet,'' he said, referring to Tom Online. ''In hindsight, I think they'd say this is the way we should have gone about it at the beginning.''The person briefed on the plan said that eBay was considering partnerships and other options for its electronic payments site, PayPal China, but that no decision had been reached. Although eBay's current site will be shut, he said, a separate site will be maintained to give Chinese users access to international auctions. And eBay's Kijiji China, a Chinese classified advertising site similar to Craigslist in the United States, will continue operations unchanged.

Medical counsel by e-mail grows in popularity.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)
FORT WORTH, Texas _ Dr. Daniel Suez makes at least a dozen house calls a day, without ever leaving his office.
E-mail makes it possible.
"It's the best way to promote good medicine," the Irving, Texas, allergist said. "It's a wonderful tool."
Many doctors have been reluctant to hang their shingle at a virtual office because of privacy concerns, but more and more are turning to technology to improve the way they practice medicine. At the click of a mouse, they're checking lab results and answering patients' questions about everything from earaches to ingrown toenails. The service, sometimes free, other times costing $25 or more, is generally not covered by insurance companies.
Physicians are, however, quick to warn patients that e-mail was never intended for emergencies or complex health problems.
"You'll never see someone with chest pains e-mailing their doctor," said Dr. Edward Fotsch, chief executive officer for Medem, a San Francisco-based e-health network founded by the American Medical Association and other national medical societies.
An AMA study released last month found that 78 percent of physicians use cyberspace. About 25 percent of physicians send e-mail to and receive e-mail from patients; three of 10 using the Internet have their own Web sites.
"Five years from now, I don't think a physician will be able to run an office without online consulting, anymore than they can run an office now without a fax," Fotsch said. "I think patients are way past ready for it."
(EDITORS: BEGIN OPTIONAL TRIM)
David Muntz, chief information officer for the nonprofit health care system Texas Health Resources, said he believes technology can minimize administrative hassles and free doctors to spend more time with their patients.
Named one of the most wired health care systems by the American Hospital Association, THR uses Web sites and online technology to serve patients through Harris Methodist Hospitals in Tarrant County, Arlington Memorial and Presbyterian Healthcare hospitals in Dallas.
"I have great hope that it will actually promote the patient-physician relationship and give physicians back the time they need," Muntz said.
(END OPTIONAL TRIM)
By putting a library's worth of educational material on their Web sites, doctors are able to provide accurate information and address common concerns. Time-crunched patients have found that Web sites and e-mail make their lives easier.
From her laptop computer, Michele Hudson of McKinney, Texas, e-mails her doctor whenever she has a health concern. Over the past two years, Hudson estimates she has e-mailed him 50 times. He doesn't charge her for the service.
"As much as I travel and as busy as I am, it's just much easier," said Hudson, 32. "Instead of wading through a bunch of nurses, or waiting until he gets free moment, I'll e-mail him, and he quickly responds to it."
Hudson said she has no qualms about online security, but plenty of other people do.
"One of the big problems is, patients don't want information about their hemorrhoids splashed across the Internet," said Dr. Charles Hendler, a Dallas internist who after 20 years in medicine recently started offering online consultations.
While Internet medicine offers some efficiencies, the impersonal nature troubles him.
"Basically medicine still has a magic element to it," Hendler said. "Sometimes what someone is telling you is a different thing from what you're seeing. The problem is not having the hands-on experience."
Dr. Stephen Buksh, a Bedford, Texas, internist, said he is concerned about what happens to an e-mail once it leaves his computer.
"If I sent a message about lab results, I don't know if the person's computer is password protected," he said, "or if someone is looking over their shoulder and reading a sensitive e-mail that says something about a sexually transmitted disease or AIDS."
(EDITORS: BEGIN OPTIONAL TRIM)
Muntz said that most computer systems are so safe that it's virtually impossible to improperly access information. Software also is being developed to ensure that protection.
"Paper records are probably less safe than electronic records," he said.
(END OPTIONAL TRIM)
Privacy is such a concern that Congress passed the 1996 Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, to limit the nonconsensual use and release of electronically stored private health information.
The regulations go into effect this fall, and health care organizations are busy buying software to help them comply.
Some health professionals are so unsure about how the federal law will affect medicine that they are steering clear of online services. The University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, for example, does not allow its doctors to conduct e-mail consultations.
In contrast, Medem has embraced technology by launching its Online Consultation service, which connects patients with their doctors through secure e-mail.
The service, two years in the making, has developed a structured, encrypted alternative to regular e-mail. Informed consent guidelines also spell out how the patient can use the service, which provides liability protection for the physician.
Using a password, patients e-mail their questions on Medem's secure network. On the other end, only the physician has the password. Questions about prescription refills can be printed out for a nurse to handle.
Still, some doctors remain leery.
"This is all brand new, and in internal medicine it seems like it would be safe," Hendler said. "But it scares me to death, because you don't want to make a mistake."
In gynecology, one specialty in which the service has caught on, many patients would rather send an e-mail than describe their medical condition over the phone.
With so many people working in cubicles, where every phone conversation can be overheard by co-workers, there is an obvious need for the technology, Fotsch said.
Dr. Daniel Moulton, a Dallas pediatrician, said he can see using e-mail to send out birthday cards or appointment reminders. But he questions its use beyond that.
"If we really wanted to be wacky, we could set up a secure gateway to provide parents password access to specific information," he said. "But I'm not sure it would be worth the cost to maintain a service like that."
(EDITORS: STORY CAN END HERE)
Although the AMA study showed 78 percent of physician use the Web, there's still a fear that e-mailing patients will eat up time, with little financial payoff.
"Doctors that have e-mail addresses on their Web sites have been overwhelmed," Buksh said. "They get not only their own patients asking questions, but people who just happen to find their Web site."
Some doctors have addressed this concern by charging for online services that go beyond routine prescription refills.

Louisville-Based Internet Services Firm Lays Off 200 Workers.
By Kris Hudson, The Denver Post Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News
Apr. 26--Louisville-based AtLink Networks Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Wednesday, laying off 200 workers -- including 50 in Colorado -- as it seeks a way to survive the bankruptcy of its largest customer.
AtLink, which relocated its headquarters to Louisville from Wisconsin in 1999, made its filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. An AtLink spokeswoman said she could not say late Wednesday how much the company claimed in debt and assets.
Privately held AtLink provides point-to-point Internet connections, called virtual private networks, and high-speed Internet access through digital subscriber-line technology.
AtLink's difficulties began this month when its largest customer, New York-based Winstar Communications, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, listing $5 billion in debt and nearly the same amount in assets.
In January, AtLink cinched a seven-year deal with Winstar in which AtLink would serve Winstar customers in areas where Winstar had yet to extend its communications network. In turn, Winstar agreed to invest $100 million in AtLink this year, AtLink said. The more-than-likely end of those payments played a large role in AtLink's bankruptcy.
"That was part of it," AtLink spokeswoman Karen Kralios said. "The markets have kind of dried up for more financing. We were in the midst of getting some more financing from our existing investors.
"A lot of that was based on the receipt of payments from Winstar," she said. "The timing of the Winstar bankruptcy was such that it put this additional funding in jeopardy."
Last year, AtLink landed $225 million in debt financing from Nortel Networks and $120 million in venture capital from private investors, including Madison Dearborn Partners, Columbia Capital, Telesoft Partners and Telecom Ventures.
In August, AtLink employed 600 people, including 175 in Colorado. Yet the company has whittled its staff in the months since. After Wednesday's layoffs, those figures stood at 200 and 50, respectively.
On Wednesday, AtLink's restructuring included the closure of its operations in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Minnesota. The company will continue to serve customers in Wisconsin and Illinois. It does not offer service in Colorado.
"It is difficult to pull out of markets where customer demand is high, but given the current capital market conditions, it is a necessary step toward saving the business," AtLink chief financial officer Gary Brandt said in a statement released by the company. "Furthermore, protection under Chapter 11 will enable us to focus on our core business and carefully evaluate our strategic options."
AtLink's is the latest of several recent bankruptcies of telecommunications companies in Colorado. Others were ICG Communications, Convergent Communications, Tess Communications, Reanet Corp. and FutureOne.com.

RockLoans.com Reports Internet Mortgage Closings of $22 Million in March.
Website Also Announces Marketing Launch in California
BINGHAM FARMS, Mich., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Rock Financial Corporation (Nasdaq: RCCK), owner and operator of RockLoans.com, announced first quarter Internet closed loan production of $29 million, including $22 million closed in the month of March. The production included conventional, jumbo, sub-prime and FHA insured residential mortgages. The closed loan volume was produced from a limited number of test markets that were launched in mid January.
"We are pleased with the initial results of our formal launch of RockLoans.com," said Daniel Gilbert, CEO of Rock Financial. "As a direct originator offering a full range of loan programs we were able to maintain our high standards of customer service which is imperative for our business. It is our belief that building a loan processing and closing infrastructure capable of closing loans across the country will be an important competitive advantage in the on-line mortgage business. Our 130-person Web sales and processing center is already closing a significant number of loans."
Rock Financial expects to realize approximately $675,000 of revenue on the first quarter Internet closed production. (This revenue is booked at the time the loans are sold in the secondary market.) With an average loan balance of $110,000, this translates to approximately $2,600 dollars of revenue per loan or 235 basis points per unit closed.
"Our business model is different from the majority of on-line mortgage companies that sell leads and broker loan applications for a significantly smaller per unit fee," continued Gilbert. "Our mission is to provide customers a wide product offering on a direct basis and smoothly and efficiently to close loans wherever they reside in the United States. This enables us to price competitively and generate a significantly higher revenue stream per closed loan, although we provide additional services and accordingly have the added expenses of being a direct lender."
RockLoans.com also announced it will start marketing in the populous California marketplace. "We are looking forward to introducing our brand and mortgage programs to Internet savvy Californians," said Sonny Spearman, Vice President of Internet Marketing for RockLoans.com. "Media testing will begin in key California markets in the next couple of weeks and a full roll out is scheduled for summer."
Rock Financial, owner and operator of RockLoans.com, earned nearly $19 million (pre-tax) on revenue of almost $90 million in 1998. The company closed over $2.3 billion in residential loans last year.

Voxeo Labs Launches Phono Mobile - Easily Add HD Voice and IM to iOS and Android Apps.
Orlando, FL (PRWEB) July 22, 2011
Voxeo Labs, the open-source and developer-focused innovation division of Voxeo, today announced the immediate availability of Phono Mobile. The Phono Mobile toolkit leverages Javascript and HTML5 to enable high-quality voice and instant messaging features on millions of mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and any Android 2.1+ phones and tablets.
Developers can use Phono Mobile to build apps that enable interaction via voice and chat quickly and easily. For example:
* Mobile gamers can easily speak or chat with each other directly within the games they play, with high-quality HD audio and without using carrier voice minutes. "HD voice" delivers fidelity far beyond a normal phone call and makes players sound like they are in the same room as other gamers.
* Customer relationship management (CRM) providers can deliver in-app features to talk or chat with customers.
* Social platforms can add a button to instantly create a conference call incorporating all members of a group.
iOS and Android apps using Phono Mobile can even receive real phone calls from regular phones, SIP voice-over-IP (VoIP) clients, Skype users or other Phono users.
Additionally, Phono Mobile unlocks communication for non-phone devices such as the iPad, iPod Touch and Android tablets. Users of those devices can make or receive phone calls and chat conversations even though their device does not include an actual phone component. Even better, the voice calls can use HD voice to offer a far superior listening experience than traditional phone calls.
Phono Mobile builds on the phenomenal success of the Phono SDK, a JavaScript jQuery plugin that lets developers add voice and text chat to web browser-based applications using only a few lines of code. Nearly 10,000 developers - including two of the largest mobile carriers in the world - are using Phono to deploy applications ranging from customer service to crisis response. Applications written with Phono Mobile can also run within any desktop web browser - including Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Safari - on Windows or Mac OS X.
"Phono Mobile opens up the world of voice and chat communications to any mobile developer who knows how to use JavaScript and HTML5," said Jason Goecke, VP of Innovation for Voxeo Labs. "Developers can now create iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android apps that connect users directly using voice or chat."
Built on the open industry standards of HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, XMPP, and SIP, Phono Mobile uses the PhoneGap application platform from Nitobi Software to create apps for iOS and Android that can be submitted to the respective app stores for purchase or download by mobile users.
"Phono Mobile is a perfect example of how PhoneGap can enable a developer to create one app and deploy it across multiple platforms," said Andre Charland, CEO, Nitobi Software, "We're looking forward to seeing how developers enhance their mobile apps now that they can add audio and IM communication."
Phono Mobile works on an iOS or Android phone or tablet using either a WiFi or 3G data connection. Apps using Phono Mobile can also connect to Voxeo's Tropo.com cloud communications service to make use of speech recognition and text-to-speech in 24 languages, call recording, conferencing, phone number transfers, SIP, XMPP/Jingle, iNum and Skype connections as well as the ability to add communication to public instant messaging networks including GTalk, AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber and social networks like Twitter.
Phono Mobile and the Phono SDK are licensed under an open source license and the source code is freely available for further modification.

Ponzi suspect seeks release.(Business)
Byline: Rami Grunbaum; Seattle Times deputy business editor
Frederick Darren Berg, held in federal custody since October on charges of running a massive Ponzi scheme, wants to be released on bail so he can guide defense attorneys through the case's mountain of financial data.
His attorneys this week asked federal Judge Richard Jones to overturn earlier orders that have kept the former financier in the federal detention center in SeaTac. They assert the center's "grossly inadequate" computer access is interfering with his defense.
Berg is accused of diverting at least $100 million from his Meridian Mortgage real-estate partnerships, which were put into bankruptcy last summer.
The prosecution has provided Berg's defense team "approximately 35 gigabytes" of digitized business records from Meridian, equal to about 1.75 million pages of written documents. He also needs access to "forensically preserved data from the hard drives of Mr. Berg's server and associated computers," which amounts to 400 times as much additional information, the filing says.
But the detention center provides only one computer that 100 detainees must share with no Internet connection or the financial software to work with the data, his attorneys wrote. Berg is the only one who can decipher the information and staying at the detention center makes that impossible, the filing says.
The U.S. Attorney's Office had no comment Friday. A hearing has not been set.

ISRAEL : IBM inks cooperation and development contract with AKOL.
IBM, US based global technology and consulting firm, inked a cooperation and development contract with Agriculture Knowledge On-Line (AKOL), an agricultural software house based in Israel.
As per this contract, IBM will administer access and technology issues. IBM will administer AKOL s cloud-based software system which offers expert information and guidelines from global farmers to the farmers in Israel.
According to AKOL, its Internet-based system will help worldwide agriculture by using joint information of kibbutzim (communal farms in Israel) and other agricultural professionals, to provide customized solutions to small farmers to boost their dairy and crop production and avoid deficiency.
Roni Shani, Chief Executive Officer of AKOL, said, "What we do here is like a bank of information and IBM provides the special tools for the end users and you can do what we call 'agricultural market. For example, if someone in Australia needs advice on how to grow their crops better, they can just ask our advice or search through our database to find the best product for the country they're growing the crops in. Let's say someone in India, a small farmer, has a problem with their crop or chickens, it's usually very expensive and time consuming to get someone to come and check what is wrong."
Shani added that, for a monthly fee, a basic subscription service offers the end user to access software database. Due to this, farmer can just watch pictures and pick the one to get the knowledge about the disease or what the problem is or to get the solution or whether it is available in their country.
Shani added, "We just started developing it for use outside of the kibbutz with IBM's help, and we are developing it also in other parts of the world, like China. Right now we're cooperating with the Chinese government to help milk producers get the most out of their milking systems. And this is just the beginning, because we are also working with other developing countries. This software will help millions of small farmers in rural or impoverished areas that will be able to get advice and benefit from other farmers' experience on the spot and at a very affordable rate."

ENSIGN CO-SPONSORS AMENDMENT TO KEEP GOVERNMENT OUT OF INTERNET.
WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by Nevada Senator John Ensign:
Senator John Ensign, a member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, today signed on to an amendment to keep restrictive government regulation out of the Internet and to prohibit the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from implementing new rules regarding net neutrality.
"In this struggling economy, any industry that is able to thrive should be allowed to do so without meddlesome government interference that could stifle innovation," said Ensign. "We must avoid burdensome government regulations that micro-manage private businesses or that limit the ability of companies to provide what their customers want. The Internet has flourished in large part because of a lack of government interference; I see no need to change that now."
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski announced today that the FCC intends to implement rules to regulate companies that provide Internet service. Chairman Genachowski proposes to create six FCC-enforceable rules to restrict how telephone, cable and wireless companies operate their Internet networks and how they manage their Internet traffic. If these rules are implemented, the federal government will be involved in the explicit regulation of Internet network operations for the first time.

Sun first to deliver RISC performance for Oracle InterOffice Suite.
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 16, 1996--Sun Microsystems Computer Co. today announced that its family of SPARC-based systems running Solaris will be the first RISC platform for users of the Oracle InterOffice Suite.
Combined with Oracle's previous announcement of InterOffice Suite for PCs running Solaris, this announcement gives users the broadest selection of Oracle InterOffice Suite platforms with the simplicity and manageability of a single common advanced operating environment.
"Sun's strength in the Intranet is a perfect fit for replicated site and branch office environments with the Oracle InterOffice Suite," said Joe Vassallo, Oracle's vice president for InterOffice Suite. "Sun is unique in its ability to give customers of the Suite a range of choice, from PCs to scalable RISC systems, all running a single operating environment -- Solaris."
According to Oracle, InterOffice Suite will be released first on Solaris, since Sun's systems are the primary development platform for Oracle.
"The Oracle InterOffice Suite will extend the power of network computing," said Mark Tolliver, SMCC's vice president of market development. "With support or web clients and JAVA applets, InterOffice will enable companies to effectively deliver the next generation of client/server applications to remote sites."
Oracle InterOffice Suite
Oracle InterOffice Suite is the first business server suite for building and mass deploying windows- and web-based client/server applications.
By tightly integrating multimedia data, WebServer, and the latest messaging, workflow and document management technology, Oracle InterOffice Suite enables companies to cost effectively deploy next generation business-critical applications across thousands of networked database servers without having a system administrator at every site.
Incorporating the new Oracle7 Universal Server (release 7.3) the InterOffice Suite lets users search, access and manage data types such as audio, video and text in a consistent and simple manner.
Oracle has licensed key technology from Sun Microsystems for inclusion in Oracle InterOffice Suite, including Java and Solaris. Java is Sun's solution to the challenges of programming for the Internet and other complex networks.
Java features portability, security and advanced networking without compromising performance. To provide a complete solution for PCs, Oracle will offer a version of InterOffice Suite with Solaris for Intel tightly integrated and bundled.
Sun SPARCservers
The Oracle InterOffice Suite will be available on the full line of Solaris/SPARC systems, including the SPARCserver 20 and ULTRAserver 1 workgroup servers. With support for Intranet, Novell and Microsoft LAN protocols, Sun makes it easy to integrate PC clients and workgroups into the corporate network.
Sun's SPARCservers provide an affordable, reliable and high-performance network computing platform, simplifying the task of managing multiple business applications throughout the enterprise.

Harris Corporation Introduces Falcon(R) III Multiband Manpack Radio.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AUSA booth 1907 -- Harris Corporation has introduced the Falcon(R) III multiband, multimission, manpack tactical radio. This addition to the Falcon III family of tactical radios provides significant new capabilities, including wideband secure networking, a four-fold increase in frequency range to 2 GHz, and a significant reduction in weight and size compared to competitive products. With its extended frequency coverage, Falcon(R) III combines traditional multiband radio features with new capabilities such as commercial L-Band SATCOM and wideband mobile ad-hoc networking.
"The Falcon III multiband radio platform offers a significant leap in networking reliability, data throughput rates, and miniaturization for our customers and brings future capabilities to the market now," said Dana Mehnert, president, Harris RF Communications Division. "These advanced capabilities allow data-intensive applications to be used in situations that were never before practical. It not only provides our customers with significantly more capabilities than current radios, but also is designed to quickly accommodate new waveforms as they become available to address their future requirements. This radio significantly extends networking and situational awareness for our customers."
The Falcon III manpack radio is a companion radio to the AN/PRC-152(C) multiband handheld and AN/VRC-110 vehicular radios, introduced in calendar year 2005. With an extended range, Software Communications Architecture (SCA) operating environment, and significant processing power, it will accommodate new waveforms for networking, TACSAT, and public safety interoperability.
The manpack radio incorporates the Harris Advanced Networking Wideband Waveform (ANW2) to provide secure IP data networking to the tactical Internet at on-air rates up to 10 megabits per second. The high data rate capability, coupled with mobile ad-hoc networking, automated network establishment and maintenance, and integrated IP Security (IPSEC), provides a powerful networking solution. Because the radios utilize the SCA operating environment, future networking waveforms can be incorporated as they are developed and released.
The Falcon III manpack radio provides 20 watts of output power - twice as much as similar-sized radios - and it includes embedded encryption for voice and data. Additionally, the radio includes an embedded, military-grade GPS receiver for timing and situational awareness.
